The Special Olympics Southern California kick-off event festivities include the official Unity Torch Walk, Hometown Hero Hoop Shoot Challenge and BBQ on Thursday, April 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Newport Beach Civic Center.

The evening includes live music, craft beer, fine wines and a BBQ provided by the Newport Rib Company. For the Hoop Shoot Challenges City officials and community members will be partnered with Special Olympics athletes to be named Hometown Heroes for Newport Beach Special Olympics.

Event participation starts at $65 per person. The money raised supports the year-round training and competition events for over 539 Special Olympic athletes that call Newport Beach home.
