SUMMARY:Roxanne Sexauer: Relief Prints exhibit opens
DESCRIPTION:
Roxanne Sexauer: Relief Prints

January 10 - March 4, 2022, Central Library

The City Arts Commission will be delighted to showcase the extraordinary work of artist Roxanne Sexauer, whose prints have been exhibited in regional, national, and international venues. Inspired by early prints depicting both the animal and plant kingdoms, Sexauer’s woodcuts and linocuts center around the organic. Such influences such as the early woodcuts of Conrad Gessner, circa 1560, and Ernst Haeckel’s lithographic prints of medusae, 1887, are visible in her work. Even the medium of woodcutting itself honors nature’s life cycles, connecting the earth, the tree, the timber, and finally, the paper on which each image is expertly printed.

Ms. Sexuaer studied with Mauricio Lasansky at the University of Iowa and the State University of New York at purchase with Antonio Frasconi. In addition to widely exhibiting her work, she has received International and National art
residencies at: Palenville Interarts, Palenville, New York; The Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences, Rabun Gap, GA; Dorland Mountain, Temecula, CA; Lily Press Residency, Rockville, Maryland; and was the Artist-in-Residence at The Plains Museum of Art in Fargo, North Dakota. International Residencies include the Skaftfell Residency Program, Seydisfjordur, Iceland; Black Church Print Studio, Temple Bar, Dublin, Ireland; and the Beisinghoff Printmaking Residency, Diemelstadt-Rhoden, Germany. Sexauer is a Professor Emerita at California State University, Long Beach, where she has taught since 1989, having served for many years as the area head of the Printmaking Discipline. In addition to studio classes, she also teaches the History of Prints and Drawings within the University’s Art History Program. Sexauer was celebrated in 2019 by LACMA as one of the notable women of the Los Angeles printmaking world.

(Dieter's Red (top) and Blackpool-Bardo (bottom) by Roxanne Sexauer)

Follow Newport Beach Cultural Arts
Facebook @newportbeacharts
Twitter / Instagram @nbculturalarts
