CERT Al Hands Meeting- Monday, May 6th at 6:30 pm at Central Library Friends Room

Newport Beach CERT Volunteers,

Our next quarterly CERT "All Hands" meeting is Monday, May 6th at 6:30 pm at the Newport Beach Central Library.  The meeting will be held in conjunction with the Newport Beach Historical Society with Fire Chief Chip Duncan presenting on the 108 year history of the Newport Beach Fire Department.  As a reminder, there are only two remaining 2019 CERT Mandatory Re-certification training's scheduled in 2019 and if you would like to remain active with the Newport Beach CERT program you must attend one (unless you graduated in spring 2019). Listed below are some of the upcoming CERT events, drills and meetings.  The CERT "All Hands" meeting on Monday, May 6, the CERT Mutual Aid class on Saturday, May 11, the county-wide CERT Mutual Aid drill on June 8th, three new American Heart Association CPR/AED and First aid classes and the 1st Annual CERT Decathlon with Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach CERT programs on August 7th.  Please email nbcert@nbfd.net to register or with any questions. CERT "All Hands" meeting- Monday, May 6th

The second quarterly "All Hands" meeting of 2019 will be held in conjunction with the Newport Beach Historical Society.  For the meeting, Newport Beach Fire Chief Chip Duncan will present on "The History of the Newport Beach Fire Department".  The presentation is open to all CERT volunteers, Newport Beach residents and anyone interested in community preparedness or the history of our department.  With this year being the 20th anniversary of the Newport Beach CERT program this presentation will be both informative and interesting in covering the 108 year history of the Newport Beach Fire Department.  You do not need to register to attend, all are welcome. 

CERT Mutual Aid class- Saturday, May 11th

The Orange County CERT Mutual Aid class is offered once a year in Newport Beach.  The class is for any Newport Beach CERT volunteers that are interested in becoming a certified Orange County CERT Mutual Aid volunteer then this is the class for you.   The class will be held at Newport Beach Fire Station #7 from 9:00 am-2:00 pm with lunch provided.  The class is open to all active Newport Beach CERT volunteers.  The minimum number of CERT volunteers have been meet for this class to be held but there are still five open spaces for any interested Newport Beach CERT volunteer.  The only requirement to attend is that you are an active Newport Beach CERT volunteer.  If you would like to attend, please email nbcert@nbfd.net.

Corona Del Mar 5k and Balboa Island Parade

CERT volunteers are needed to assist with staffing community preparedness booths at two upcoming community events- the Corona Del Mar 5 K on Saturday, June 1st and the Balboa Island Parade on Sunday, June 2.  We are in need of 3-4 CERT volunteers to staff our community education booths for each event.  For the Corona Del Mar 5K on Saturday, June 1, CERT volunteers are needed from 7 am-10 am and for the Balboa Island Parade on Sunday, June 2, CERT volunteers are needed from 9 am-1 pm.  If you are interested in volunteering for either of these events, please email nbcert@nbfd.net.  

CERT American Heart Association CPR/AED and First Aid classes

The fire department has scheduled three American Heart Association CPR/AED and First Aid classes, exclusively taught by and for our CERT volunteers.  Each class requires a minimum of 15 participants for the class to be held and you must register at least 10 days prior to the class.  We will be holding the class this Saturday, May 4th with a small number of participants.  If you would like to attend this Saturday, May 4th, show up to the Station #7 training room a little before 8:30 am.    The cost to attend the class is $40.  To register for any of the CPR/AED and First aid classes listed below email nbcert@nbfd.net.

CERT Decathlon with Costa Mesa CERT and Huntington Beach CERT- Wednesday, August 7th

The Newport Beach Fire Department is hosting the 1st Annual CERT Decathlon with Costa Mesa CERT and Huntington Beach CERT on Wednesday, August 7th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Newport Beach Fire Station #7.  The friendly competition will put each of the three CERT teams through three scenarios that highlight the most important aspects of the CERT curriculum.  Up to 30 Newport Beach CERT volunteers can participate.  The event will be really fun and a great opportunity to interact with two other Orange County CERT programs.  We need a minimum of 20 Newport Beach CERT volunteers to field our team so if you are interested, please register.  Please note that the date has changed to Wednesday, August 7th.  If you are interested in being apart of the Newport Beach CERT Team for this event or would like additional information, email nbcert@nbfd.net.    

2019 CERT Mandatory Re-Certification classes

In 2017, the Fire Department held mandatory CERT re-certification classes for all Newport Beach CERT volunteers that wanted to remain active with the program.  If you received an annual letter in the mail then you are one of those active CERT volunteers.  All Newport Beach CERT volunteers that would like to remain active with the program must register and attend one of the mandatory re-certification classes listed below in 2019.  Similar to the State of CERT awards banquet, we have set-up on-line registration for the 2019 Mandatory Re-Certification classes.  All Newport Beach CERT volunteers are encouraged to register for one of the mandatory re-certification classes listed below.  Please note that CERT volunteers only need to attend one of the classes listed below and class registration will close 10 days prior to each class.  There are only two remaining 2019 CERT Mandatory Re-certification classes, if you do not attend one in 2019 you will not be considered an active Newport Beach CERT volunteer.  If you have any questions about the mandatory CERT re-certification classes, please email nbcert@nbfd.net or REGISTER to attend.

Fall 2019 CERT Program Schedule

The fall 2019 CERT program schedules have been finalized.  This fall the fire department will host a Tuesday-Thursday evening program that starts on September 17 and an all-day Saturday program that begins on September 21.  If you would like CERT class postcards for to distribute at neighborhood events, please email nbcert@nbfd,net.  Interested participants are encouraged to apply by completing and mailing in a CERT program application to reserve their space.  Also, as a reminder, active Newport Beach CERT volunteers are welcome and encouraged to attend any fall CERT individual classes if they would like to review their skills, please email nbcert@nbfd.net if you would like to attend a class. 

Orange County CMAP- CERT Mutual Aid Program- American Red Cross Shelter classes 

Newport Beach CERT volunteers that are currently CMAP certified and those that are interested in getting CMAP certified, American Red Cross and the Orange County CERT Mutual Aid Program (CMAP) have created a special on-line and in-person training program for CERT volunteers across Orange County to complete the CMAP Mutual Aid requirements.  Over the next few months, the Red Cross will be offering several Shelter classes at its Santa Ana headquarters.  All Newport Beach CERT volunteers that are interested in either remaining active CMAP certified volunteers or those that would like to be CMAP certified are encouraged to take one of these classes.  These classes and the entire process will take some time, please be patient and read the directions carefully.  If you have questions about the Orange County CERT Mutual Aid Program please email nbcert@nbfd.net.  If you are interested in taking any of the upcoming CMAP American Red Cross Shelter classes please read the directions on the attached form

Community Preparedness Outreach Presentations

If your home owner's association, business, school or civic group are interested in a fire department presentation in 2019 or if you are having a CERT neighborhood event that you would like for us to attend please schedule as early as possible for all of 2019. The fire department offers one hour community preparedness presentations on disaster preparedness, hands-only CPR and how to stop the bleed to Newport Beach home owner's associations, civic groups, businesses and schools. A minimum of 15 participants are required.  If your group is interested in a community preparedness presentation please email nbcert@nbfd.net with the date, time, location and the estimated number of participants.  Please provide as much advanced notice as possible for dates in 2019.
