Scythe by Neal Schusterman (some spoilers)

Review by Haley

Scythe

Scythe was an amazing endearing book to read. It took place in the future and has this very realistic feel to it for what the future could actually be like. What makes the book Scythe special is not the way it was written but the expression that came out of the words down on the paper. I find it so unique that this author thought the future could be like this. This book takes place in the very far future where humans have conquered death. This also takes place where humans are able to be revived if they are killed. A way someone is permanently killed is by a scythe gleaning them. The beginning of the book deals with two main characters Citra Terranova and Rowan Damisch. They both live very different lives in that aspect of their families and how their families treat them. Since everyone can live longer and they can even turn corners which means that they can be set down to their desired age many people had multiple brothers and sisters. Citra’s family was a very small family compared to most other families. Rowans family was very big and he was not noticed. This is how they came from two different worlds of being raised. One day a sky comes to each of their homes on different days but it’s the same sky. This is scythe Faraday. He is a well respected scythe who it’s going to take them both on as apprentices. Being a scythe apprentice means that you can compete in the future to become a scythe. It is abnormal to take on two apprentices at a time. It is difficult because these two apprentices will have to compete against each other the one who does not win will perish. The book then goes through the different methods that scythes use to kill their victims. They go over poisons, blades, and many others. In this book taking someone’s life is an art which I find to be interesting because now we think of death very sorrowful. But in this world because of the needed population control death is much more common. Other huge part of this book is the AI being named the Thunderhead. It has no human form. The thunderhead cannot talk to those that are scythes but it can talk to normal people. The Thunderhead helps people, controls crime, and takes care of any other problems that the human race may face. Some thing I liked about the book a lot was that it showed a different possibility for the future and what could actually happen. Another thing that I really liked was that it talked about how people have gotten over discrimination which is something that in the present is so huge. One thing that I wasn’t a huge fan of in the book was that the style of the writing was nothing special and I like it when the writing style is just so different and unique and I felt like this was just kind of basic. But overall would I recommend this book? Your answer is yes definitely. This was so great. It’s a three book series. I read at least 100 pages every night because I was just so engulfed in the book and I overall really loved it.
