About Corona del Mar Branch Library

The Library in Corona del Mar (or CDM) dates back to the mid-1940's. By 1947 the population of Corona del Mar was such that residents needed a library closer than Balboa, where the main City library was located. Working with the Corona del Mar Business Association, library officials organized and opened "a tiny library station" of the City library in a CDM storefront. The station was on the corner of Goldenrod and Pacific Coast Highway and monthly rent was $45.

In 1952 The Corona del Mar station library was moved to the old custodian's house of the Corona del Mar school (since demolished), and finally to a 2,000 square foot building on Marigold. Ninety percent of the Marigold building's cost of $29,000 was raised by donations. This was accomplished by a gift to the library of two lots in Corona del Mar, which were then sold, as well as the fundraising activities of the newly established Friends of the Newport Beach Public Library.

Strong support for the local neighborhood branch resulted in recommendations by the Board of Library Trustees for designing a new building that would incorporate the Library with a new Fire Station to be built at the Marigold site. In November 2015, the City approved plans for design and construction of the new Corona del Mar Library and Fire Station. Construction began in 2018 and the new Corona del Mar Library and Fire Station was completed in September 2019.

The 10,314 square foot joint use Corona del Mar Library and Fire Station was built to replace the two aged buildings and maximize interior space, energy efficiency and parking areas. Corona del Mar Library features a colorful children's area, comfortable reading areas, stroller parking and the Friends of the Library Reading Porch with outdoor seating, tables and umbrellas. The collection of books and media materials is brand new and funded through generous contributions from the Friends of the Library, Newport Beach Public Library Foundation and individual library supporters.
