City License Inspectors visit construction sites to ensure compliance with Municipal Code §5.04.020, which requires all businesses that operate in the City have a current Business Tax Certificate and to notify new businesses of the requirement. The on-site inspections include construction sites and involve personal visits to all sites. If a business is being operated a construction site the License Inspector asks to see the license of each subcontractor on the job. In addition, with construction sites the inspections are usually done bi-weekly as the trades people change as the job progresses.
The City works with the builders and/or general contractors by having a Subcontractors Listing Information Program (SLIP). By providing a monthly list of all contractors, and distributors that deliver any of the materials to the Newport Beach location, the builders and/or general contractors prevent the need for City License Inspectors to conduct a disruptive or time-consuming inspection. This program has proven to save valuable time and money, as subcontractors receive information about the licensing requirement via mail versus on the job site location were they will need to obtain a license on the spot if they do not already have one.
All that is necessary is to complete the Subcontractor Listing form, or you may provide a listing of your own and return it to the Revenue Division prior to your final inspection. Upon receipt of the listing we will note your site has agreed to participate in the program and pending site inspections will be cancelled. We prefer that you email your listing to the Business License Section at firstname.lastname@example.org in an electronic format such as MS-Excel, especially as this saves the cost of paper and postage. The City then sends a confirmation of the submittal.
