ISO Class 1 Rating

The Newport Beach Fire Department has recently achieved the prestigious top rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) for its national Public Protection Classification (PPC) Program. This notable accomplishment places NBFD in an elite category, as less than 1 percent of fire departments nationwide have earned this distinction.

For perspective, of the 11 agencies in Orange County, we are currently only 1 of 3 fire departments in the County classified as Class 1.

The significance of the Public Protection Classification (PPC) program lies in its recognition of communities that excel in providing effective fire protection services for both citizens and property owners. It serves as a testament to a community's commitment and investment in fire mitigation, which is a proven and reliable predictor of future fire losses. Insurance companies utilize PPC information to establish fair premiums for fire insurance, often offering lower rates in communities that demonstrate superior protection. This creates a tangible economic incentive for communities to enhance and maintain their public fire protection services.

The ISO evaluation considers several factors when rating a fire department and their fire suppression features including:

• Emergency communications and systems
• Water supply
• Location of fire hydrants
• Department staffing levels
• Training
• Location of fire stations
• Community outreach
• Fire prevention.

The Department began this review in April of 2022 and officially completed all documentation and required reports in December of 2023. Currently, ISO is processing the Class I score and generating the PPC Summery Report for distribution in early 2024.

This achievement reflects the dedication of our Fire Department and the entire Newport Beach community to ensuring the highest level of fire protection. It is a testament to our ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of our residents.

In California, out of the 854 fire departments evaluated by ISO, only 45 have received Class I designation.

Out of the 38,195 nationwide fire departments evaluated by ISO, only 498 have attained the coveted Class I Organization status.
