The Fire Prevention Division provides a full range of services encompassing community education and preparedness, emergency planning, fire prevention, code enforcement, fire inspections, vegetation management, and plan check services of new and tenant improvement construction projects. The division is focused on the prevention of the loss of life and property and damage to the environment through education, enforcement, and preparedness. We are committed to providing the highest level of service and expertise in partnership with our community.

Fire Safety Inspections

Over 1,300 commercial occupancies are included in the Division’s inspection program; the majority of which are conducted by the Department’s firefighters. Highly technical inspections, such as schools, care facilities, hospitals, and similar institutions are inspected by the Fire Prevention Division's staff.

Hazardous Materials

The Hazardous Materials Disclosure / Business Emergency Plan (HMD/BEP) is administered by the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Environmental Health Division (OCHCA). New businesses can complete its HMD/BEP electronically at cers.calepa.ca.gov. For questions or assistance on this program, please contact OCHCA at 714-433-6000 or ocelectronicreporting@ochca.com.

Plan Review

Fire Prevention staff works with developers, architects, and engineers to ensure that fire protection requirements are met for building improvements, new development, and structural modifications. Plans are reviewed to ensure the proposed fire suppression systems meet the California Fire Code, Newport Beach Municipal Code and the National Fire Prevention Association codes and standards. Conducting plan reviews ensures the safety of the building occupants, guests, and first responders.

Special Fire Protection Areas

Fire Prevention provides inspection services for residential properties within the city’s wildland interface areas. All Special Fire Protection Areas are inspected annually by Fire Prevention to ensure compliance. The City of Newport Beach Municipal Code contains several building code requirements that only apply to structures built adjacent to Special Fire Protection Areas.
