NOVEMBER 3, 2026 GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION
General Municipal Elections are conducted in the City of Newport Beach in November of even-numbered years. The next General Municipal Election is scheduled to take place on November 4, 2026, for purposes of filling seats on the City Council for a four-year term for council districts 1, 3, 4, and 6 and the following Measure.
MEASURE - CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH GENERAL PLAN AMENDMENT
Shall the measure to amend the City of Newport Beach’s General Plan Land Use Element allowing 2,900 new affordable housing units (2,160 reserved for extremely low-, very low-, and low-income households; and 740 for moderate-income households) with densities of 20 - 50 dwelling units per acre, plus State of California allowed housing density bonuses, in Dover/Westcliff (174), Newport Center (870), West Newport Mesa (406), Airport Area (929), and Coyote Canyon (521), be adopted?
Who Can Run for City Council?
Any member of the public who meets the requirements below may run for public office in the City of Newport Beach.. Candidates must:
- Be at least eighteen years of age
- Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of California
- Be a registered voter and a resident within the district the candidate seeks to represent for not less than 30 days preceding the date of filing candidate papers. The City Clerk shall confirm the voter registration will be verified before issuance of the official nomination petition.
Councilmembers are elected for terms of four years and are limited to two consecutive terms.
NOMINATION PERIOD
The Nomination Period opens on July 13, 2026, and closes at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026. In accordance with California Elections Code, a nomination petition may not be issued until the nomination period starts. The required forms will only be available during that time and include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Nomination Petition (must be signed by at least 20, but not more than 30, registered voters from the District he or she is nominated);
- Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement; and
- Campaign Finance Disclosure Statements.
CURRENT CONTRIBUTION LIMIT:
Pursuant to Chapter 1.25 of the Newport Beach Municipal Code,
the contribution limit is $1,500, effective July 1, 2025.
