The Newport Beach Fire Prevention Division oversees inspections for over 1,300 commercial occupancies. The majority of these inspections are conducted by the Department’s firefighters, ensuring that businesses comply with fire safety standards. For more specialized facilities, such as schools, care facilities, hospitals, and similar institutions, inspections are performed by the Fire Prevention Division’s highly trained staff.
These inspections play a critical role in maintaining a safe environment for building occupants and first responders, ensuring compliance with applicable fire codes and standards.
Fire Prevention staff works with developers, architects, and engineers to ensure that fire protection requirements are met for building improvements, new development, and structural modifications. Plans are reviewed to ensure the proposed fire suppression systems meet the California Fire Code, Newport Beach Municipal Code and the National Fire Prevention Association codes and standards. This review process ensures the safety of the building occupants, guests, and first responders.
The following codes and standards are enforced:
- NBFD Guidelines and Standards
- California Fire Code
- City of Newport Beach adopted amendments to the California Fire Code
- National Fire Protection Association codes and standards
