City looks into the future for Mariners’ Mile

From October 17 to 21, 2014, on behalf of the City, the Congress for the New Urbanism California Chapter conducted their Annual Charrette focusing on Mariners’ Mile. The five-day planning and design charrette tested new ideas to improve the corridor. With public participation and local knowledge, the design teams identified design techniques focusing on improving vehicular flow, the pedestrian experience, and bicycle access.
A summary of each day’s events is provided below and the presentations from the opening and final sessions are also included. The team’s recommendations will be detailed in a final report expected to be presented to the City by the end of the year.
Friday, Oct. 17 - 5:30-7:00 p.m. – view Opening Presentation
The Mariners’ Mile charrette study area will be reviewed for its current strengths and weaknesses, with a particular focus on the nature of the pedestrian, vehicular, and bicycle experiences, which clearly need improvement. With extensive harbor frontage and good visibility and accessibility, this district has great potential. Some proven New Urbanism principles will be considered as part of the toolkit for enhancing this important and heavily travelled area in the heart of Newport Beach.

Sunday, Oct. 19 - 5:00-6:00 p.m. – Public Walking Tour | SE Corner of Tustin Ave & Coast Hwy
Join members of the charrette team for a public walking tour of a portion of Mariners’ Mile that has unusually great potential for placemaking and walkability, including possible access to the harborfront. The opportunities and challenges of this area will be discussed.

After five days of intense planning/design activity and extensive public input, the CNU-CA team will unveil some proposals for the transformation of parts of Mariners’ Mile. Come see whether the team was able to identify solutions that simultaneously improve vehicular flow, the pedestrian experience, and bicycle access—goals that seemingly are at odds with each other—as well as improve access to the waterfront.

A little about the Congress for the New Urbanism
CNU is the leading organization promoting walkable, mixed-use neighborhood development, sustainable communities and healthier living conditions. Beginning in 2013, the CNU's California Chapter (CNU-CA) started a program to host a CNU-By-Design annual charrette program ("the Charrette") as a Board-led activity that provides educational and membership outreach opportunities statewide. The Charrette is designed to assist a city in visualizing the positive impact that CNU's principles and processes can bring to a site. These annual Charrettes are led by Board Members and supported by CNU-CA members statewide. Selection of an Annual Charrette project is based upon the request's relevance to CNU initiatives and expertise, such as Transit-Oriented Developments, Form-Based Codes, Sprawl Retrofits, and Tactical Urbanism, as well as the potential to have an impact.
