Set: Be Prepared to Evacuate

When wildfire conditions intensify, it’s time to get SET—which means being fully prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. Taking proactive steps now can ensure a safe and efficient evacuation when the time comes.

Monitor Fire Conditions

Stay alert and informed about wildfire threats in your area:

  • Sign up for emergency alerts through AlertOC Brochure or AlertOC Online
  • Follow official sources like the Newport Beach Fire Department, CAL FIRE, and the National Weather Service.
  • Be aware of Red Flag Warnings, which indicate high fire danger due to weather conditions.
  • Check evacuation zones and routes in advance.

Review and Finalize Your Emergency Plan

Ensure your family emergency plan is ready to go:

  • Know multiple evacuation routes and have a backup plan. Become familiar with City Evac Map.
  • Assign responsibilities (who grabs what, who contacts family, who helps pets).
  • Keep gas tanks at least half full in case of a sudden evacuation.
  • Have a communication plan in case cell service is down.

Doublecheck Your Emergency Go Bag / Kit

By this stage, your Go Bag / Kit should be packed and easily accessible. Make sure it includes:

✅ Important documents (ID, insurance, property records)
✅ Medications and medical supplies
✅ Flashlights, batteries, and a phone charger
✅ Non-perishable food and water for at least 3 days
✅ Extra clothes, sturdy shoes, and hygiene items
✅ Pet supplies (food, leash, carrier)
✅ N95 masks for smoke protection

Prepare Your Home Before You Leave

If time allows, take these last-minute actions to reduce fire risk:

🔥 Close all windows and doors to prevent embers from entering.
🔥 Move flammable furniture away from windows.
🔥 Shut off gas at the meter and turn off pilot lights.
🔥 Leave exterior lights on to help firefighters see your home.
🔥 Place a ladder against the house for roof access if needed.
🔥 Back your car into the driveway for a quick exit.

Be Ready to Leave Immediately

If an evacuation order is issued, do not wait—leave early to avoid being trapped.

🚨 If you feel unsafe, leave even if no official order has been issued.
🚨 Follow designated evacuation routes—do not take shortcuts. Become familiar with City Evac Map.
🚨 Check in with neighbors and assist those who may need help.

Stay Updated and Know Evacuation Warnings

Authorities use specific evacuation terminology:

🔵 Evacuation Warning – Be prepared to leave. A fire threat is near.
🔴 Evacuation Order – Immediate danger. Leave now.
Shelter in Place – Stay indoors; conditions outside are unsafe.
