Filing Fire Code Complaints or Violations in Newport Beach

Ensuring fire and life safety within the City of Newport Beach is a top priority. The Newport Beach Fire Department (NBFD) is committed to maintaining a safe environment by enforcing fire codes designed to protect residents, businesses, and visitors. If you observe a potential fire code violation or have concerns about fire safety, you are encouraged to report it.

All fire-related concerns or complaints are investigated. However, please keep in mind that fire hazards are only deemed as such by the Fire Department, not the public. Additionally, the Newport Beach Fire Department does not get involved in civil or legal disputes between neighbors. If your concern falls outside the Fire Department’s expertise, we recommend seeking legal or expert advice.

To ensure proper action is taken, the following online form must be completed when submitting a fire code complaint. If the concern is not fire-related, we will direct your inquiry to the appropriate department.

Examples of Fire Code Complaints & Concerns:

  • Blocked or Locked Exits – Emergency exits must remain unobstructed and accessible at all times.
  • Non-Functioning Fire Alarms or Sprinkler Systems – Fire protection systems must be operational and maintained regularly.
  • Overcrowding – Exceeding the maximum occupancy limit in a building can pose a significant fire risk.
  • Improper Storage of Flammable Liquids or Hazardous Materials – Businesses must follow regulations for safely storing hazardous substances.
  • Accumulation of Combustible Materials – Excessive storage of paper, boxes, or other flammable materials can create fire hazards.
  • Blocked Fire Equipment  –  Fire protection equipment / appliances must be accessible to emergency responders at all times.

If you need to report a fire code violation or concern, please complete the ONLINE FORM and provide detailed information about the location and nature of the issue. This will help ensure a prompt and appropriate response from the Fire Prevention Division.
