Job Information and Requirements

$88,584 - $130,880/yr + Medical and CalPERS retirement

Candidates with experience may start at a higher salary step depending on time on the job and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED; and
  • 18 years old; and
  • Firefighter I; and

    The following meets this requirement:

    • Certification from the California Office of the Fire Marshal - State Fire Training; or
    • Proof of successful completion from a California Office of the Fire Marshal – State Fire Training Accredited Firefighter 1 Academy; or
    • IFSAC Firefighter I certified; or
    • Pro Board Firefighter 1 certified.
  • California EMT-Paramedic License; and
    • Candidates with a National Registry EMT-Paramedic License may submit an application along with verification they have applied for a California EMT-Paramedic License with the California Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA).
  • Valid Driver’s License (must possess a California Driver’s License within 30 days of appointment); and
  • Valid Basic Life Support (CPR) for Healthcare Provider card; and
  • Copy of CPAT or Biddle PAT (Physical Ability Test) certification completed within 12 months of application date.

 

Hiring Process

  • Applications – This is the first step of the hiring process. All applications will be reviewed to ensure the candidate meets the minimum qualifications for the position. 
    • All qualified candidates will be invited to the “written test.”

       

  • Online exam
    • The top-scoring candidates will move on to the oral interview.

       

  • Oral Interview – This will be an in-person interview with Fire Captains of the Newport Beach Fire Department.
    • Candidates to pass the interview will move on to the ocean swim.

       

  • Ocean Swim –Newport Beach is a coastal community with over 47 miles of water frontage. The swim test is conducted to ensure candidates can operate safely in and around water. The test is conducted at the Newport Pier. Candidates will enter the water from a ramp at water level at the end of the pier and swim to shore. The distance is approximately 250 yards, depending on the tide. There is no time limit.
    • Candidates who complete the swim will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.
