The City is well-prepared to minimize damage to property in the event of flooding due to high tides or rain. The City's Storm Drain Crew maintains and operates 86 tidal valves at the end of select streets along the bay. The tidal valves are in place to prohibit rising tide water from entering the street through the storm drain openings. Additionally, crews operate 18 pumps that drain street ends of standing water. You may often see the crew out working during storm events to protect the areas from flood damage.

To protect your home or property when heavy rains are in the forecast, Newport Beach residents may pick up 10 sand bags at the City Corporation Yard located at 592 Superior Avenue. (Please bring proof of Newport Beach residency.) The City will have the bags ready for pick up at least one business day in advance of the storm. Please call the Public Works, Municipal Operations Division at 949-644-3055 to confirm availability. If more than 10 bags are needed for your property, please check your local hardware store for filled or unfilled sandbags available for purchase. Empty bags may be filled with beach sand.
