The Perfect Aquarium by Jeremy Gay

Review by Frederik

the perfect aquarium bk cov

The book I read was very informative. It is a book that talks about all the equipment and tools that are needed to make the aquarium the most perfect environment for the fish so they can thrive. In the first chapter it talks about the things you need for a healthy fish tank. You  first need a tank, that should be researched on how much is needed for that specific fish like a goldfish needs 20 gallons and a betta fish needs 5 gallons. Then there are the tools that you need to make the environment better. A heater is usually at 64 fahrenheit for goldfish and 75 -86 fahrenheit for betta fish. It is most important for fish that come from more heated climates like the amazon. You will also need a different filter for every kind of fish. People say you don’t for some fish, but every fish needs one filter, which does its job by sucking in the water, passing the water through multiple filter media to make the water more sanitary.  Those are the main things you need, but there are many non necessities that help a lot like a thermostat or an air stone, which is just another boost of oxygen for the tank. Now that we talked about the things you need, there are a few things that you can add to your tank to make it look more like home for the fishes, for example you can add substrate decoration and live plants which is the next chapter. Live plants are a great addition to a tank in multiple beneficial ways. The first is through adding extra sources of beneficial and helpful bacteria. It can also help by making the tank look more whole and give it a more realistic look. Some good beginner plants are duckweed, which is a floating plant java fern and anubias. These plants are all very easy to care for and grow very fast, especially the duckweed . The next important thing that you want to know is the hard piece. The hard piece is the centerpiece of the tank and is usually a big piece of wood or multiple stones. But with keeping fish comes great responsibility since you are the one that controls their world. There are many sicknesses like fungi but the most deadly is  ammonia, which is a chemical from the fishes poo that can kill the fish in an instant. Planted tanks don’t have this problem, since the plants take the toxic ammonia out of the water by absorbing it. This is a big reason why goldfish die very fast.  If you then have enough success and have kept them alive for many years you can try breeding them but each fish has their perfect temperature and environment so research carefully. It is also sometimes costly since their diets are very specialized . I really liked this book because it does not only give you a good overview about the setup and beginners introduction, but also takes you to the next level of fishkeeping. I hope this gave you a better overview of fishkeeping.
