Early Literacy Fun at Home

Librarians at Newport Beach Public Library know the importance of early literacy for children and they are keeping it at the forefront in their efforts to provide meaningful online content for parents, caretakers and children during this stay-at-home period.

Children introduced to reading early on tend to read earlier and excel in school compared to children who are not exposed to language and books at a young age (American Academy of Pediatrics).  Reading, rhyming, singing and talking all play a role in developing literacy skills, and despite the Library building being closed and regularly scheduled programs canceled, there are lots of resources available through the Library’s website.

The library staff recently added a list of Early Literacy Fun at Home things to do, complete with lyrics for the staff’s favorite fingerplay songs and rhymes.  Other resources for enhancing early literacy at home include, video storytimes, storytelling, educational games, ebooks and distance learning resources.
