Happy Hour with Author Julia Phillips

Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy invites supporters to enjoy Happy Hour with popular author, Julia Phillips, from the comfort of your own home on Saturday, October 24. Julia Phillips will talk about her debut novel and National Book Award finalist, “Disappearing Earth.” The virtual happy hour will start promptly at 5:00 p.m.

“Disappearing Earth” is set on the shoreline of the Kamchatka peninsula at the northeastern edge of Russia where two sisters have disappeared and the police investigation has turned up nothing. Echoes of the disappearance reverberate across a tightly woven community, with the fear and loss felt most deeply among its women. The compelling portrayal of richly drawn characters, all connected by the crime: a witness, a neighbor, a detective, a mother, immerses the reader in the intricate bonds of family and community. Phillips’ spellbinding and emotional storytelling quickly propelled this powerful novel into contention for a long list of awards and accolades, including being selected as a finalist for the National Book Award, and being highlighted on numerous lists as one of the 10 best books of 2019, including the New York Times and Vanity Fair.

The Happy Hour event is free. Registration is limited. Donations to Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy are greatly appreciated. Register at or by emailing Registered guests will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link to the event.
