The Newport Beach Fire Department will hold its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) “Drill the Skills” for over 100 CERT volunteers. “Drill the Skills” is a chance for new CERT graduates from both fall 2012 CERT programs as well as active CERT graduates to refresh their skills and renew their certifications.
The Newport Beach CERT program is a Department of Homeland Security Citizen Corps training program to train and certify residents to help themselves, their family and their neighborhood following unexpected disasters. The Newport Beach CERT program recently won the prestigious FEMA 2012 award for Outstanding CERT Program Initiatives and received an Honorable Mention for Volunteer Integration. Newport Beach holds four CERT classes each year, two in the spring and two in the fall and has certified over 1000 residents and had over 1500 residents participate in the program.
